Dr. Obi Warns Against Bush Burning In Onuimo LGA

The Executive  Chairman of   Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Dr. Emeka Paul Obi, has warned the people of  the Local  Government to desist from burning bushes especially during this dry season.

He warned that  those caught flouting the order  will be arrested.

Speaking at the weekend during the inspection of the remains of  Umuduruegbeaguru Community Secondary School which was engulfed in an inferno on Thursday night, he lamented the monumental loss of equipment and structure which is said to be running into millions of naira, adding that the dilemma which the students will face when they resume early next year was better imagined than described.

The chairman who was shown round the burnt structure by the Community Youth President expressed worry that despite repeated warnings and admonition to the the people of Onuimo, some would still choose to disobey the order.

He said:""The order I gave through the various stakeholders on bush burning at this time of the year was not punitive and not targeted at anyone."

"It was simply to safeguard properties and lives. You can see what has happened here."

"When I received the unfortunate news of the incident, I immediately mobilized people to the scene, but they could not do anything. The whole laboratory and building have been completely razed."

"Let me warn again, people should put an end to bush burning at this time of the year. My administration will not tolerate this kind of news again."

"I am going to call a meeting of the stakeholders to sound the warning again. Anybody caught doing it will be arrested and prosecuted."

He used the opportunity to call on Corporate bodies, public spirited individuals and government to come to the aid of the council so as to quickly put structure in place before school resumption next year.
