Winners of the Late Mother of Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, Mrs. Bettinah Okunwa Friday Benson (Nee Daniel Indigboro Tonwei) canoe race and wrestling competition organised as part of the funeral activities on Saturday, 2nd March, 2024 at the water front of Korokorosei in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has received various cash prizes.
In the female category, Korokorosei Community emerged 1st, Olugbobiri 2nd while Ikebiri Community clinched 3rd position.
Similarly, in the male Canoe Race Ikebiri town contingent won the 1st position, Olugboboro came 2nd while Ombugbene secured the 3rd position.
Members of the organising committee of the burial, Surveyor Igo Assembly Goin, Barr. Carter Cleopas who hails from Otuan and also a Commissioner in the Bayelsa State Local Government Service Commission and the wife of Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, Mrs. Ayibapreye Konbowei Benson presented various cash prizes ranging from N100,000, N50,000 and other consolation prizes to all the participating communities drawn from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
In his remarks while appreciating the participating communities, the organiser of the canoe race, the first son of the deceased, Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly glorified God for his grace and enablement for making the competition possible.
Senator Konbowei Friday Benson noted that canoe race is synonymous with the riverine communities of the Ijaw Nation particularly among the people of Korokorosei saying that it is a way to uphold the age long customs and traditions to promote peaceful coexistence in the Communities
The former Speaker and Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government turned Federal Lawmaker thanked all the participating communities for honouring his invitation to accord his late Octogenarian Mother her final respect as she goes home in style and advised all and sundry to maintain law and order in their communities.
In a similar vain, Ombu Obaze of Bulu- Agobiri floored Zigena Emen of Ikibiri in the main bout of the wrestling competition after flexing of muscles, display of tactics and skills held at the Community Secondary School Field Korokorosei on the second round while the first and the third bouts ended in draw.
Ebena Fouebi, Emmanuel Lagos, Ayibaesin Ogbolomo and Egbale Melford wrestled on the side of Ombu as supporting bout.
Those that wrestled as supporting bout on the side of Zigena Emen include Erefa Didekeme, Okoriye Ebisindei and Keteketei Ebikeme, alias Double Lion
All the supporters bout ended in draws except Okoriye Ebisindei who defeated Ebena Fouebi on the second bout.
Chief Feke Orua and Richard Henry were the time-Keeper while Mr. Thick Forest was the referee.
Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, Survey Igo Assembly Goin, Barr. Carter Cleopas, wife of the Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Mrs. Ayibapreye Konbowei Benson and other well wishers gave various sums of money to the wrestlers
The PDP Southern Ijaw Local Government Chairman, a former Councillor and Chief, Hon.Wilabo Ikoro Sylvanus was among dignitaries that watched the wrestling competition
