FCC,NUJ Mourn Lawrence Ewhrakpo

 

Members of the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State, have described  the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State,  Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo,  as a  true friend of journalists in the state.

A statement on Sunday by the Chairman of FCC, Tife Owolabi, maintained that Ewhrudjakpo's

 relationship with the media was marked by mutual respect, encouragement and an unwavering belief in the power of responsible journalism.

Stating that he will be remembered as a dependable ally, the FCC members described Ewhrudjakpo as a public office holder who maintained an open-door policy toward journalists and consistently acknowledged their role in highlighting critical issues affecting the state. 

According to the chapel, the late deputy governor never missed an opportunity to commend the works of correspondents across media platforms, often offering words of encouragement and constructive engagement, regardless of the subject of reportage.

Journalists within the chapel noted that Ewhrudjakpo understood the media not as adversaries, but as partners in governance, development and public accountability.

 They recalled that he related with reporters professionally and personally, demonstrating uncommon humility and respect for the press, even in moments of intense political pressure.

The statement continued:"Beyond his cordial relationship with journalists, Ewhrudjakpo was as a thoroughbred politician and administrator whose years of experience shaped his principled approach to public service.

" He proved himself, especially in difficult and uncertain times, as a leader guided by conviction rather than convenience, and as a mentor who invested quietly but consistently in the growth of others.

"The late deputy governor exemplified the art of living a simple life while making a profound impact. Despite his formidable intellect and depth of learning, he carried himself without arrogance, remaining emotionally stable, mature and deeply principled in both public and private life.

"Ewhrudjakpo  will be also remembered for his warmth, love and devotion, qualities that endeared him to many beyond the political space.

" Those who worked closely with him said his balanced life, rooted in discipline, restraint and empathy, set him apart in a political environment often defined by excess.

"Ewhrudjakpo’s death has created a void that will be difficult to fill because he  is  irreplaceable and unforgettable. His legacy would endure not only in policy and politics, but also in the enduring goodwill he built with the media and the wider Bayelsa society.

"Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo will be remembered as a friend of the press, a man of principle and conviction, and a public servant whose simple life left a lasting imprint on the sand of  Bayelsa State."
