I’ll Speak On Defection Speculation Soon, Says Diri *Southern Ijaw Leaders Thank Bayelsa Gov

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said he is not bothered nor distracted by the speculations about his purported plan to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on the issue publicly for the first time on Saturday when he received the member representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei, other leaders and stakeholders from his constituency on a thank-you visit at his country home, Sampou, in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state, Governor Diri said he would put the speculation to rest at the right time.

While restating his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, which he said would open up the Niger Delta region to increased socio-economic activities, the Bayelsa helmsman noted that his presence during the recent inauguration of a section of the road in Lagos fuelled the rumour.

"A fortnight ago, I was invited to Lagos for the inauguration of a section of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road and the flag-off of phase two of the Nembe-Brass road. I raised observations when l saw a map of the coastal road displayed in the hall with Bayelsa and Edo states missing.

"l immediately drew the attention of the contractor and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to the anomaly. Both of them admitted error in the drawing as the two states were part of the project and that it would be corrected.

“So, when it was the turn of the Minister to speak, he gave me special attention by stating that the Bayelsa governor was thinking progressively and working progressively. A lot of people then assumed that the deal had been done.

"The Minister of Works actually started this new wave that the Bayelsa governor was about to defect because of the attention he brought upon me on that day. At the end of the day, what is important is whether we are able to bring development to our place.

"If for any reason there has to be a movement, you are the people that will advise me because you voted for me. The decision to move or not will be made based on the interest of Ijaw nation and Bayelsa State and not my personal interest only. So do not mind what is trending. When the right time comes, you will hear from us."

Commending the people of Southern Ijaw for appreciating  his Prosperity Government's support and developmental projects in their area, Diri urged them to  remain united, shun politics of division

and focus on development.

The governor advised the political class to put God first while serving the people, adding that politics should be played according to the rules.

In his remarks, Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei lauded the governor, saying his support enabled him to offer effective representation to his constituents.

Ambaowei presented his two-year mid-term scorecard to the governor and assured his constituency of more development projects.

Also, national chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Amb. Boladei Igali, said the visit was to appreciate the governor for his support to the people of Southern Ijaw.

Dr. Igali also commended the governor for appointing sons and daughters of the area into positions of trust, saying that they were proud of their performance.

He praised the Bayelsa chief executive for the ongoing Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie senatorial road project among several others in the local government area.

On the Southern Ijaw delegation were Senator Konbowei Benson (Bayelsa Central), Senator Moses Cleopas, the House of Assembly members representing the area - Felix Bonny-Ayah  (Constituency 1), Monday Bubou (Constituency 2), Moses Marlon (Constituency 3), and Selekaye Victor-Ben (Constituency 4)

Others were the   Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, Chairman, Executive Secretary, Bayelsa Students Loan Board, Dr. Michael Amaegberi, Chairman, Southern Ijaw Local Government, Target Segibo, one of his predecessors, Nigeria Kia, former Chief of Staff, Government House, Talford Ongolo, a former Commissioner and one-time Acting President, Ijaw National Congress, Charles Ambaiowei among others.
