Bayelsa State Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ), Mrs Grace Orumieyefa has urged parents to take the upbringing of the Boy child seriously maintaining that their well being was vital in building a stable society.
Mrs. Orumieyefa made the call on Thursday in Yenagoa when the Association celebrated the international day of this year's boy child day at the NUJ Press Centre Ekeki.
The Nawoj chairperson who called for more attention on boys development warned against neglect, stating that "it would undermine society's treat as the boy child needs the tools they require to be mentored like the girls at home.
She thanked the boys who attended the program and other attendees for coming stressing that much concern was being given to the girl child in terms of moral behaviour with less concern for the boy who will be a future husband to the girl and a better man in the society if nurtured.
Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Chapter, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha in his opening remarks encouraged the audience to be discipline, dedicated, appreciative irrespective of their family background and value who they are for society to value them.
Advising the boys to abstain from drugs abuse, Commandant of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Bayelsa State Mr. Erepa Poweigha advised young boys to say no to drug abuse.
Mr. Poweigha who spoke on the topic "Enlightening the boys on "Drug Abuse" explained that drug abuse is the improper way of taking drugs which can change the mood or perception of an individual stressing that many Nigerians are languishing due to illegal drug activities such as cocaine, marijuana and so on.
He urged the boys not to allow themselves to be lured into unnecessary journeys with people or believe on unverified promises to avoid being drug addicts.
Speaking on the theme of the programme, "Empowering Boys: Building Self-Esteem, Shaping a Brighter Future" Former Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Comrade, Tarinyo Akono highlighted many ways of building self-esteem to include seeing failure as an opportunity to study hard and achieve set goals.
A health Practitioner, Mr. Ebiwoyengi Omun who spoke on the topic: "Health Tips on HIV/ AIDS" admonished the male children to take care of their health and gave ways to contact and how to avoid the virus such as abstaining from sex and the use of protection.
The event had students from Ebi-Favour Group of Schools, Isaac Jasper College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Community Secondary School Agudama-Epie, Government Science and Technical College as well Nawojians children.
Gifts were awarded to the top 15 students who impressively summarized the presentations of the resource persons, highlighting the programme's impact on empowering the boy child.
