The founder of the Pastor Reuben Initiative for Good Leadership and Accountability, (PRIFGLA), Pastor Reuben Wilson has sympathized with the families of those who lost their lives in a boat mishap which occured during the week in the waterway of Baylesa State.
Pastor Reuben Wilson who is also a board member, University of Uyo Governing Council,described the deaths as unfortunate and regrettable.
Recall that a boat conveying marketers from Southern Ijaw en- route Yenagoa on Wednesday morning cought fire while some that were awake and can swim swam to safety while others sleeping were burnt to ashes with the boat.
But Wilson in a statement on Friday, while expressing grief over the tragic incident stated that : "it a great loss not only to the family members of victims, but to Southern Council and Bayelsa State at large."
He further noted that the sad incident has resulted in the loss of lives and properties worth hundreds of millions .
The founder of PRIFGLA called on the federal government, state and the local government councils as well as all relevant authorities to put the necessary policies in place to ensure that boats plying "our waterways are sea worthy and conform to marine safety standards to forestall further occurrence.
The statement stated: "It is unfortunate that Bayelsans who were full of life and eking out a living would die in such a tragic manner."
"Please, marine transport operators should place utmost value on the safety of lives and properties of passengers by providing life jackets. They should also ensure that their boats are in good condition before embarking on such journeys."
Pastor Reuben however commended the maritime union and all those involved in mobilising for rescue operation.
