The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has advocated formore opportunities and increased investments for the girl -child especially adolescent girls .
Celebrating the day with a sensitization for the Girl Child in Yenagoa, the association through her Chairperson, Grace Orumieyefa disclosed that there is an urgent need for increased awareness in vital areas to enable the girl child realize their dreams in the society.
The chapter noted that creating opportunities and avenues for the girl child to speak and showcase thier potentials will encourage them to vie for leadership positions in future and help the society at large
The Association frowned at the actions that negate the growth of the girl child both educationally and in other areas and called for gender equality to uphold the the rights of women in the society.
She said " We are advocating for an improvement of programmes to support the girls' well-being on maternal health care, hygiene, issues of self security and protection.
"We also call on relevant stakeholders including parents to promote girls' rights in their homes and work places.
"It will encourage government to listen and tackle the needs of adolescent girls which include tackling the stigma and poor treatment many adolescent girls face in accessing essential services.
